Are you still learning tagalog? Want some tagalog language translation? Below are some basic tagalog words along with their english conversions.

Tagalog – The Word For My

People often refer to something as "my" to indicate that it belongs to them. Similarly the word is also used to indicate the relation between people; such as when siblings refer to each other as "my brother" or "my sister" and when spouses refer to each other as "my husband" or "my wife." Therefore, the word "my" is indispensable. In the Tagalog language the word for "my" is "aking."

During conversations you might hear Tagalog speakers using the word "aking" and it means "my." For example, when saying "my address" the speaker can say "aking tirahan." The word for "address" is "tirahan" and it is a noun. Similarly, the Tagalog word for "car" is "kotse" and it too is a noun. The noun is the previous examples is placed after the word "aking." Therefore, to say "my car" we could say "aking kotse."

Some commonly used Tagalog nouns are pagkain (food), liham (letter), and trak (truck). By adding the word "aking" (my) before these nouns we can say "aking pagkain" (my food), aking liham (my letter) and aking trak (my truck).

The word "aking" can also be used to show relationship to people. For instance, to say "my brother" we can say "aking kapatid na lalake" and to say "my friend" this translates as "aking kaibigan." Related phrases include "sa akin" (with my) and "para sa akin" (for my). Another word related to "my" is "me." The word for "me" in Tagalog is "ako." For example, if the speaker were saying "tulungan mo ako" the translation of this would be "help me" and if someone said "kitain mo ako" then this means "meet me."

Introducing yourself to someone is something that is done when meeting people for the first time. Again, in this situation the word "my" plays an important role because during introductions people often say "my name is…." In Tagalog saying "my name is…." translates as "Ang aking pangalan ay….." When learning to speak a language saying their name is one of the first things that people usually learn.

In Tagalog the word "aking" means "my" and it is used to show ownership or possession. The word can also be used to show relationship to someone such as a relative or friend. In the natural course of a conversation when getting to know someone, people often speak about themselves and at times speak about their family. During such conversations the word "my" is often used.

What really is essential in learning a new language is constant practice.

Learn Tagalog Online – How to Speak Tagalog Fluently in Less Than a Year

Imagine yourself speaking Tagalog fluently at a family gathering one year from now. Wouldn’t that be great?

Yes, of course, you say. But how can I learn Tagalog so quickly? The key is to do a little Tagalog every day using good learning materials.

Learning a little Tagalog every day is so crucial because when you skip a day, your commitment to continue is at risk. You’re much more likely to skip another day and then another…

By doing even just 5 minutes on busy days, you stay on the program. Those 5 minutes can mean the difference between success and giving up. The trick is to create the routine to learn Tagalog at a specific time of the day. This can be after dinner or during your lunch break or any other time that is convenient and easy to remember. It’s best to do it after some other daily activity that you never skip.

That’s it. That’s the big one. With regular practice you can learn almost anything.

How fast you progress and how much fun it will be depends on your learning materials. A good course saves you a lot of time and concentrates on what’s important, giving you all the information you need.

For a good Tagalog course, this means:

1. Plenty of dialogues
2. Audio
3. Translations
4. Grammar
5. Good structure

Let’s have a look at each of these points.

Dialogues are extremely important. Speaking a language is not just making factual statements. When we talk, we express our emotions with our intonation and our choice of words. We use fillers, expressions, exaggerations etc. These can only be learned with the help of natural dialogues.

Audio is the only way you can become familiar with the sounds of the language. Repeat the sentences aloud to train your pronunciation and don’t forget to imitate the intonation! Act like you’re part of the story. That really speeds up learning, as the story sticks much better.

Translations are an absolute must. They come in two flavors:

(1) word-for-word translations or hints (when there is no equivalent word in English) and
(2) natural translations to put the whole sentence in English. That way, you really know what a sentence and all the words in it mean.

Grammar. Tagalog grammar can be tricky. Although basic Tagalog is easy to learn, it is very different from English and guessing how it works is nearly impossible. A good Tagalog grammar reference works wonders.

And structure. The course needs to be structured in such a way that you don’t feel overwhelmed as a learner. Dialogues should be easy in the beginning and become gradually more complex.

How would you know if a course is good? Look inside! That’s the advantage of online courses. No need to order before you see what you get. A final word of advice: practice with native speakers. Surprise them with your witty sentences. Let them know you are on a program to learn their language, and they will surely help and encourage you.

Yes, you can learn to speak Tagalog in a year. The real trick is to do a little every day. Use good materials and put it into practice! Personally, learning Tagalog has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done for my marriage. It has been a great source of fun and I definitely recommend it. It’s one of those things you want to pass on.

I hope you enjoy learning Tagalog!

Want to learn some basics of tagalog? Well, one of the essentials you need to know is the numbers right? If it’s tagalog numbers you’re looking for, below are some resources to help you learn and speak tagalog.

Numbers in Filipino Part 1

In Filipino, one may use English and Spanish numbers both in speaking and writing but never in the formal theme writing (academics). Here are the numbers in three languages (note that I arrange it in this manner-Filipino, English, Spanish, and Filipinized Spanish numbers):

Isa, one, uno, (same).

Dalawa, two, dos, (same).

Tatlo, three, tres, (same).

Apat, four, cuatro, kwatro.

Lima, five, cinco, singko.

Anim, six, seis, sais.

Pito, seven, siete, syete.

Walo, eight, ocho, otso.

Siyam, nine, nueve, nwebe.

Sampu, ten, diez, dyis.

As you can see, I have here a forth entry which is the Filipinized version of the Spanish. This is because, the Abakada (Latin alphabet based on Tagalog language) omitted some letters found in Spanish alphabet. However, Filipino language today have its modern alphabet (that includes letters, C, F, J, Q, V, X, Z) since there is a need to use those letters to adapt to changes (without any confusion with due to the limitations in spelling of the old standard. All of the numbers presented above may be used interchangeably. Notice the (same) in the first three row of the last column. The spelling is similar to the original. As for numbers eleven to nineteen, simply by putting labing prior to the first nine numbers we discuss will make it the Filipino numbers. The word labing is derived from labi which means remains. That is to say, eleven in Filipino may be interpreted as remaining one and twelve, remaining two and so forth. For the Spanish and the filipinized version, I list them below. The format is Spanish, filipinized version.

Once, onse.

Doce, dose.

Trece, trese.

Catorce, katorse.

Quince, kince.

Dieciseis, dyesisais.

Diecisiete, dyesisyete.

Dieciocho, dyesiotso.

Diecinueve, dyesinwebe.

As for twenty, I will group it together with the others by ten. You will notice that at the end of every number have this MPU attached. This can be interpreted as ten times any given numbers from one to nine. Back to the Filipino word for ten, the prefix sam is actually the word isang which is derived form the word isa or one. This can be interpreted as one multiplies by ten or ten. The format is Filipino, Spanish, and Filipinized version.

Sampu, diez, dyis.

Dalawampu, veinte, bente.

Tatlompu, treinta, trenta.

Apatnapu, cuarenta, kwarenta.

Limampu, cincuenta, singkwenta.

Animnapu, sesenta, (same).

Pitompu, setenta, (same).

Walompu, ochenta, otsenta.

Siyamnapu, noventa, nobenta.

The suffix pu as I said earlier denotes ten but what about the m before pu. This letter is actually the modifier particle na or ng. The sound changes depending on the near by sounds so don’t be confused with this. Only forth, sixty, and ninety possess the na. That is because prior to na, there is consonant sound. /t/ and /m/ sounds. As for the rest, they all have vowel sounds so m is added. As for ng, we will discuss this soon. Let’s continue from twenty to twenty nine.

Dalawampu’t isa, veinteuno, benteuno.

Dalawampu’t dalawa, veintedos, bentedos.

Dalawampu’t tatlo, veintetres, bentetres.

Dalawampu’t apat, veintecuatro, bentekwatro.

Dalawampu’t lima, veintecinco, bentesingko.

Dalawampu’t anim, veinteseis, bentesais.

Dalawampu’t pito, veintesiete, bentesyete.

Dalawampu’t walo, veinteocho, benteotso.

Dalwampu’t siyam, veintenueve, bentenwebe.

Notice the apostrophe? Here, twenty one for example may also be twenty and one since the ‘t is actually at which means and in Filipino. All the way to ninety nine, this pattern is followed. As for the Spanish, Let’s have another example to show clarity.

Treinta y uno, trentay uno.

Cuarenta y dos, kwarentay dos.

Cincuenta y tres, singkwentay tres.

Sesenta y cuatro, sesentay kwatro.

Setenta y cinco, setentay singko.

Ochenta y seis, otsentay sais.

Noventa y siete, nobentay syete.

Notice that in the original, numbers are expressed in three words and the y in the Filipinized version was absorbed by the first word. Follow this pattern so that you can use these Spanish numbers the Filipino style.

Looking to learn tagalog online? Are they any good? Actually online resources like youtube vids may help you learn some common tagalog words. If you’re looking for a tagalog lesson, then you could really refer to some online resources such as the article below.

Learn Tagalog Online – Getting a Taste of a Beautiful Language

The word Tagalog comes from two words–taga means "from" and ilog means "river." So tagalog refers to something–in this case, people or language–from the river.

Tagalog is a language spoken by Filipino people, though it’s not the official language of the Philippines. Much of the official language is based on Tagalog, though a native Filipino will quickly tell you there are many differences between the two languages. In general, the official Filipino language borrows more heavily from English and Spanish than Tagalog does. The Filipino people who don’t speak Tagalog may be offended if you refer to Tagalog as the official Fillipino language.

Tagalog is also spoken by small groups of people in other areas of the world. It’s an ancient, native language, filled with beauty and tradition. Many people want to learn Tagalog strictly because it’s a beautiful language. They may also want to learn Tagalog to get in touch with native roots, or because they plan to travel to areas where Tagalog is spoken.

Whatever your reasons are for wanting to learn Tagalog, you have more resources available now than in the past. A quick internet search returns several websites where you can learn Tagalog. You may even be able to order programs for more advanced study.

To whet your appetite, here are a few common English words with their Tagalog translations.

Thank you–Salamat

How are you?–Kamusta?

Beautiful day!–Magandang araw! (This is also the phrase most Tagalog people use in place of our "hello".)

Farewell–Paalam (Or, for an informal parting, ba-bay.)

Yes/no–Oo/hindi

Wait–Sandali lang

Take care–Ingat ka

I love you–Mahal kita

Another interesting feature of the Tagalog language is their use of the word "po" as a way of showing respect. If you’re speaking to someone older than you, or otherwise worthy of showing deference, you should add the word po at the end of your phrase. So, for instance, if you greet an elder, you would say, "Kamusta po?" instead of simply, "Kamusta?"

Learning any foreign language can be a difficult task, and Tagalog is no exception, but you’ll be rewarded for your effort by learning a beautiful language and joining in an ancient tradition.

Ingat ka!

Learning tagalog is not as hard as some people may think. The tagalog language is in fact influenced by several different languages so don’t wonder if some words sounds familiar. Anyways, here are 3 ways to learn tagalog and speak it later on…

3 Ways to Learn Tagalog

Tagalog is the most widely spoken of all the native languages in the Philippines. English is spoken in the cities but once you get out into the provinces you will need to learn at least one of the native languages. Tagalog is not only the most widely spoken but contains enough of the other languages that you will get by anywhere in the country.

In this article I want to teach you 3 ways to learn Tagalog. We will consider some free ideas, some formal ideas and then some more practical ideas.

One of the 3 ways to learn Tagalog is to simply subscribe to or watch Philippine television. If you watch enough of Waa Waa Wee or those old Bruce Lee style bad movies you will surely pick up the language. It might take a lot longer than some of the more formal methods but at least you will be on your way. Try and get movies with English subtitles so you can also see what they are saying. You can also reverse that and get English versions with Tagalog subtitles and learn that way.

The second of the 3 ways to learn Tagalog is to attend a formal training college. Do a search in Google or one of the other search engines and see what schools, colleges or universities are offering formal training. This can be rather expensive and also take a while but at least you will have a structured learning pattern.

The last of our 3 ways to learn Tagalog is to purchase a product where you can sit down and learn at your own pace. There are many ways you can do this but here are my favourites.

* Learn Tagalog through a DVD – Watch the DVD and participate in all the activities. You can always rewind it if you miss something and it can be very interactive. You will hear the way the words are spoken and sound like a local.

* Learn Tagalog through a Book – Read the book at your own pace. Stop and go back if you are unsure and read anywhere you like. You won’t get the pronunciation correct at first but you are well on your way to learning.

Learn Tagalog through software – This method can have the added advantage of a book as well as some verbal training. You can download it straight to your computer and start learning right away.

There aren’t many things you can find for free nowadays. If you want to learn tagalog free, one way you can try is learning through friends. Tagalog is quite easy to learn. Here are some other simple ways to learn and speak tagalog.

Learning Tagalog Made Simple

If you have been anywhere in the Philippines, you would know that Tagalog is the national language of this 7,107 island rich archipelago, known for its pristine beaches, fine white sand, and hospitable people. The language used to belong in a set with Alibata, an ancient yet extinct alphabet system used by its ancestors before colonialism set in.

The most modern name for the national language is Filipino, which is known to include certain words that are used in several of the local dialects that are used all throughout the different regions of the country. Tagalog is primarily spoken by the majority of the inhabitants in the northern part of the country but most of the people illiterate or not can speak the language as well as English which is the medium used for instruction. In fact, that is one of the strengths of Filipinos: their ability to speak and write in English despite illiteracy. That is one of the primary reasons also why the country has become a favorite outsourcing hub of many foreign entrepreneurs.

The Filipinos can easily mix with any culture and any race. They have the knack to make any culture a version of their own. Like the way Canadian English or Australian English has come into life so is there Filipino Americans and the greatest thing about it is that they do well and excel in whatever field they pursue. For a people who have been influenced and placed under the rule of strong cultures such as the Japanese, the Americans, and the Spanish who ruled the country for almost 300 years, surviving and finding their national identity is a fierce struggle and these people triumphed.

The country is currently lagging behind its Asian neighbors in terms of economic development but it has done one thing that even the Chinese people would not have been able to understand until the Philippines decided to fight for democracy with the use of prayers and people’s unity-hence the term people power: the force that the modern world neglected, the same force that helped topple the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall, and helped countries like Cuba to fight for democracy through its people, and even East Timor for its new independence.

Anyone who would like to discover the country and its people who seem to be nave and passive yet fierce and vigilant of its freedom should understand what it is to be Filipino and one good way to do it is through learning the national language. Now that the whole world is starting to realize that they’re not the only ones existing, that there are people who are great and live life with integrity despite being trampled on by many in its entire course of history, you can learn the tagalong language on your own, without a Tagalog trainer or going to a university class for Tagalog lessons. You simply have to get yourself a Pimsleur Tagalog language learning audio program and you’re all set for learning the language in a short and enjoyable time.

Most things don’t come around for free nowadays but if you want a free philippine language translation, I might just have the thing. Here is an article containing tagalog translations about directions.

Directions in Filipino

This article is dedicated to telling every location in Filipino. Please be informed that before every word listed below, the speakers add the word sa which marks the next word as an adverb of place. It is very similar in use to the English word in. In English, we always encounter the word the after the in (in the…). In Filipino, the word ang is the equivalent of the, but it is not used in this way. Ang is used for the subjects and the objects in the sentences and not in adverbs of place.

Four cardinal points in Filipino

Below, we have here enumerated the four basic cardinal points. However, since the Philippines have several provinces which have Spanish names (along with are the words like norte and sur), I will include these Spanish terms for directions in this article. Notice that I did not add the Spanish for east and west. This is because they are not used in the Philippines. Instead, there are words oriental which is eastern or the orient and occidental which means western used in Philippine provinces.

Hilaga/Norte – North

Timog/Sur – South

Silangan – East

Kanluran – West

The in betweens (cardinal points)

The point that we will be discussing in this next group of directions are the variations in southern areas. Katimugang is derived from timog which we already know as south. The affixes ka and an (note that the g attached is used as modifier) are used to mean a certain place. Remember that there are some words which do not have ka in the end to mean a place and just have an alone is attached. As for the timug, Filipino tends to change sounds depending on the nearby sound for better blending.

Hilagang silangan – Northeast

Hilagang kanluran – Northwest

Timog silangan – Southeast

Timog kanluran – Southwest

Katimugang silangan – Variation of southeast

Katimugang kanluran – Variation of southwest

More specific directions (cardinal points)

About this next group, it is common to hear this in weather news in the local media.

Hilaga hilagang silangan – NNE

Silangan hilagang silangan – ENE

Hilaga hilagang kanluran – NNW

Kanluran hilagang kanluran – WNW

Timog timog silangan – SSE

Silangan timog silangan – ESE

Timog timog kanluran – SSW

Kanluran timog kanluran – WSW

Different locations in Filipino

Below are some of the words indicating locations in Filipino. I further sort them to clarify that there are root words that are used in adverbs of place without having affixes attached (like the basic cardinal points).

Taas – Up

Baba – Down

Labas – Outside

Loob – Inside

Gilid – Side

Tabi – Beside

Sunod – Next

Kanan – Right

Kaliwa – Left

Gitna – Center or Middle

Harap – Front

Likod – Rear or Back

Below are some of the words indicating locations in Filipino which have affixes to it. Look at the words above and below. They are derived from the words up and down which are listed above. The prefix i is attached. These two are also used as imperative verbs (raise/lift and put down/under). To avoid confusion, please remember that verbs in Filipino are usually in the beginning of the sentence and the adverbs of place always have the word sa before it. Itaas mo ang bandila natin. – Raise our flag (itaas is used as verb). Sa itaas, nakatulog ako – Upstairs, I fell asleep (itaas is used as adverb of place). Look at the word for below and beneath in my list below. They are derived from root words babaw which means superficial and lalim depths. Now, let us go to the words for beside and flanking. The prefix used here is ka. If you remember, I said earlier that there are words which do not have ka but instead retain an as its suffix. There are words which do not have an as suffix but retain ka as prefix. Katabi and kasunod are the examples of it.

Itaas – Above

Ibaba – Below

Ibabaw – Top

Ilalim – Beneath

Katabi – Beside

Kasunod – Flanking

Pagitan – Between

Philippine Literature – A Brief History

Philippine is a country rich in diversity and language heritage. Even before Spanish colonization, its literature had evolved tremendously. Some of the notable literatures are a general reflection of the influence exerted by Spaniards during the colonization of Philippine. During pre-colonial times, there has been widespread evidence that the island inhabitants display a culture rich with traditions. Folk speeches, folk songs and indigenous rituals are part of their daily lives. The infusion of such elements represents a lifestyle deeply ingrained in the locals. An understanding on the history of Philippine literature will allow us to appreciate the literary riches of this nation.

The colonization by Spain did not subject literature development to a halt. Rather, it breathed a different kind of life into the local literary works. European civilization was imbued into the local traditions through religion and institutions. During that period of time, performing theaters were introduced and the local languages experienced enrichment. Much later, Spain brought about liberal ideas and a sense of internationalism to the people of Philippines. Similar to the period of renaissance, it has substantial influence on local intellectuals. They start to question and portray the meanings of "liberty and freedom" in their works. The history of Philippine literature demonstrates that the combination of realism and surrealism gives rise to some of the greatest Philippines literature today.

19th century marks a change in the literary development when Filipino intellectuals educated in Europe wrote about colonization and the associated downsides. This realization brought about a reformation movement which eventually led to the downfall of the Spanish colonial. The history of Philippine literature was once again marked by a change when English was introduced. The introduction of English language led to the slow demise of Spanish, and subsequently literature written in Spanish. The sustaining use of English language birthed some of the well known English poems, short stories and once again enriched the local literature in a unique way.

Upon examination, we will discover that Philippine literature encompasses a way of life and values cherished by the locals. The local literature is a uniting element among its people, and will continue to evolve as enriched by modern changes.

Learning to speak tagalog is not that hard. By the way, tagalog is the most common spoken dialect in the Philippines. Speaking the tagalog language can help you communicate well with Filipinos. Aside from that, if you have a Filipina GF, you can somehow surprise her by speaking in tagalog some romantic phrases.

Learn to Speak the Philippine Language

The Philippine language is actually made up of many dialects and the main language spoken by the locals really depends on where you happen to be. In the southern areas of the Philippines the languages vary from Bisaya or Visayan to Cebuano. These languages have been learnt and spoken over many years and have been influenced by the different ruling powers that have occupied the Philippines from time to time.

However if you want to learn to speak the Philippine language there is no need to learn the many different languages. The major language spoken by sheer volume of speakers is Tagalog. Tagalog is spoken particularly in the northern islands like Luzon which contains the capital city of Manila. The other languages also have some similar words to Tagalog which can be understood by the vast majority of Filipinos. So if you want to learn to speak the Philippine language then you should learn Tagalog.

Now you may have heard that English is spoken in the Philippines and whilst this is true, the level of English spoken will vary greatly as you move around. English is taught and spoken in the major cities as well as schools. However there are many Filipinos who have either never been to school or did not attend long enough to learn English. Rich Filipinos will speak English where as the poorer folks will struggle to understand a word you are saying.

If you learn to speak the Philippine language you will instantly become more popular and better received by the people of the Philippines. Communicating in Tagalog shows respect and for people who do not have a lot then the respect you show them will certainly hold you in high regard

If you venture out of the city areas then you will need to learn to speak the Philippine language to survive. Try telling a person who has never been to school that you want to catch the bus to a province in English. Depending on where you are the driver may have never even seen a person who speaks English let alone know the language.

Do yourself a favour and learn at least the basic level of the local language.
